I just walked and texted for the first time this AM . . . but I still remained aware of my surroundings! These people seem totally oblivious. One guy is even surprised there is a camera nearby (after he runs into a low pole).
The Time article (link above the video) says that the padded posts were a PR stunt, and were only up for 24 hours. I was wondering the same thing you were before I read that. =)
Ridiculous. Back when I was a kid, I used to read a book while walking, and I never ran into anything. If you can't stop texting long enough to remain aware of your surroundings, it's YOUR FAULT if you run into something. And if you are texting while crossing a street, you probably deserve to get hit by a car. Think of it as evolution in action...
Call me a prehistoric animal if you want, but I never saw the point of texting in the first place. It's only because I'm faster with my voice than with my fingers.
I can honestly say that despite a lot of "distracted" walking, I've never bumped into things. I walk and text all the time and never come close to injuring myself. Maybe it's because I also, like the poster above, come from a long background of walking and reading.
Of course, I do tend to trip, fall and bump into things all the time while just walking. Really, in my case, the distractions are all that save me!
