My theory is that books which take place in Austin are best written by authors who live in Austin (at least part of the time). Sarah Bird is probably the best example of this. Her fiction captures the essence of the city. In The Boyfriend School, I am able to perfectly imagine the world of her main character because I've been to the places mentioned, or have met people like those in the novel. True, that is more of a late 80's view of the town, but I think it still holds up.
And now I'm really worried. Well, more intrigued, and worried at the same time.Ella Varner has it all–a successful career as an advice columnist, a handsome boyfriend, and a circle of friends in Austin.
Some nice person wrote in my vox blog for "Best Local Blogger" on the A-List. That is so sweet! I'm assuming it was my sister or another family member, but if it was someone else, thank you, whoever you are!
Obviously, as Truecraig writes for Austinist, I have met him and read his posts regularly. I think he is deserving of the award. =)
update: It wasn't Leah; she says she didn't even know about the poll. So, thanks, someone else!

I just bought season one of Friday Night Lights on DVD. I have heard that they have a “satisfaction guaranteed” deal with the DVD set, so if you don’t like it, you get your money back. But I’ll be keeping my set.
Now if you rent or buy season one and want to see the episode with our old living room in it (ok, we have moved, but we still have the furniture), it is episode six: El Accidente. My couch, spice rack and dinner table (and more!) are featured in the one-minute scene when Coach Taylor goes to the house of the kid who has been beat up.
Kyle Chandler sat on my couch, y’all. With Panda’s cat hair and all. However short that scene is, we’ll always have that.
I just found out that I won a poster autographed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo that I bid on at a silent auction on Saturday morning. There was a poster sale and silent auction at the Paramount and I bid the starting price for the poster. And no one else bid after me! Ladysmith Black Mambazo was one of the first concerts I ever attended; I went with my mom to see them in 5th grade.
Also, Leah and I put down a deposit on a condo across the street from my office. We really wanted to stay in our neighborhood in East Austin, but how ironic is it that we can't afford to rent a house in East Austin, but can afford a condo in chichi Northwest Austin. I hate to leave my side of town, but it just worked out that way. Plus, it will be less driving, since I can just cross the street to work.
We move in mid-June.
I didn't make up the awesome PDF schedules, Justin did. So cool.
But I did do short summaries for about 12 of the lesser-known classics showing at the Paramount this summer. It helps that I've seen all of them (not The Fantasticks, though).
Austinist: Summertime Means Classic Movies at the Paramount
Leah and I just walked from our house to the lot to take photos. Dusk was falling.
When we got to the buses, it was too dark for our cameras, and mine ran out of juice. Here's what I got:
Ah well. Last night as we drove by the lot we noticed that they had film trailers set up and the buses were gone; they must have been filming there.
