I read this book after Saramago won the Nobel Prize. It was enthralling and haunting. I'm not sure about this film version. The positive is that the director is the same guy who did The Constant Gardener which is a great film. The negative (at least for me) is that Julianne Moore is in it. I don't mind her as a side character in films (such as Children of Men), but when she is a main character in films, they tend to plod along. I have tried several of her films and am always left with the same feeling.
So unless this film gets absolutely glowing reviews, I'll wait til DVD.
What movie cliché would you most like to live out in real life?

How about the whole film of Say Anything? Except I'm way too old now to fall in love with someone the summer after high school graduation.
Happy birthday, John Cusack! You used to be my favorite actor (and I had a big crush on you), but your recent movies have really let me down, and now I just feel sorry that your talent is being wasted. And I have other favorite current actors as a result.
I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that. -- Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything
As an added plus for Cusack's birthday:
I just found out that I won a poster autographed by Ladysmith Black Mambazo that I bid on at a silent auction on Saturday morning. There was a poster sale and silent auction at the Paramount and I bid the starting price for the poster. And no one else bid after me! Ladysmith Black Mambazo was one of the first concerts I ever attended; I went with my mom to see them in 5th grade.
Also, Leah and I put down a deposit on a condo across the street from my office. We really wanted to stay in our neighborhood in East Austin, but how ironic is it that we can't afford to rent a house in East Austin, but can afford a condo in chichi Northwest Austin. I hate to leave my side of town, but it just worked out that way. Plus, it will be less driving, since I can just cross the street to work.
We move in mid-June.
Audio: Show us your favorite movie soundtrack.

5/18 Update: Okay, thought of these two that Bernstein composed, especially in light of last night's Ugly Betty (sob!).
The soundtrack for On the Waterfront is on "The Essential Leonard Bernstein".
I didn't make up the awesome PDF schedules, Justin did. So cool.
But I did do short summaries for about 12 of the lesser-known classics showing at the Paramount this summer. It helps that I've seen all of them (not The Fantasticks, though).
Austinist: Summertime Means Classic Movies at the Paramount
I hate to write these posts too early, but I'm also afraid that if I write them after I read a book and start on another that I'll have forgotten the qualities of it. Anyway, I just started on Ian McEwan's Atonement. I'll admit that I don't read very many male authors. I think it's the feminist in me, happy to break free of the white-male writer canon, taking in as many other works as I can. I'll also admit that I am a tad skeptical of a man writing the thoughts of a teenage girl. It is a slight bias I have, I guess.
I just finished chapter one, and so far so good. I checked out this novel from the library because a film version is coming out soon, and I'm sure the book will be better. That's usually the way it works. I haven't read anything else by this author, but all the book blogs love him. Here's hoping I will too!
update 5/12 - Got halfway through the book and am so angry at one of the main characters that I refuse to read any more. Maybe it's shallow of me, but I figure that if I take time to read something, it might as well be something I enjoy, not something that continues to piss me off. The book is extremely descriptive, and there is less dialogue than I would prefer. I may read something else by this writer . . . but not any more of this book.
Book: What book would you like to see made into a movie?
Submitted by Felipe Anuel.
There are some books that I think could be made into movies, but it is rare that a movie adaptation of a book is as good as the book. I guess if these books were in the hands of a deserving director, I might suggest:
(There have been films made about Lola Montez before, but I think she is deserving of a more modern look.)
