I had given up on Grey's Anatomy after Meredith died and then didn't, and then Izzie and George looked to be hooking up. I had to stop watching before things got much worse - so I skipped all last season and wasn't planning on going back. But then I read Alan Sepinwall's preview post for this season and he said about Grey's Anatomy and Desparate Housewives:
So I decided to give the show another try. And I'm glad I did, not just because the show was back to its first season goodness, but also because I had forgotten about the neat music the show uses. It's not all golden, but the first ep of this season used a song by an Los Angeles-based group I'd never heard of. I loved their harmonies, and found their album on eMusic. I've been listening to it pretty consistently since then. The band is called The Rescues and the song I've posted here is "Break Me Out (2.0)" (not the song used in the episode, but one of my faves from the album).if you gave up on either one because they seemed tired or just annoying in their familiarity, now might be a good time to try a return visit.
I heart Sam Phillips.
And a slower, more ponderous version by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant which I love just as much below.
I got this CD through a day-sale on Amazon (it was only $5 for the mp3 album). I love it as much as I expected to; I've had it on my wish list for months now, ever since I heard them on WNYC's Soundcheck talking about the album and singing songs from it. It's a lovely CD, even if you're not a fan of Robert Plant (I am not). Krauss and Plant's voices just make an amazingly sweet blend. I never would have put the two of them together, but I'm glad they thought to try it, and that we get to enjoy the results.
Favorite tracks include their version of Sam Phillips' "Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us" and "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" (see video below).
I like all the songs on the Like Vines album, but the waltz really stands out to me. I can't imagine writing a waltz; from my limited music-composition experience (one semester of Music Theory II), it seems very difficult to me.
If you are
I've put up "Lighthouse", the waltz-ish song, and "Don't Wake Me Up", a fun romp that showcases their harmonies. update: Vox doesn't like the "Don't Wake Me Up" track, so I've put up "Where We Went Wrong", which is a little slower, but still has some great harmonies.
sidenote: I wish I knew how to tag my mp3s so the album covers show.

Well, sheesh, I have no answer to this. I have too many favorites. Here's one of my favorite pieces of music at this moment:
Yes, it is very minimalist.
