I don't post my dreams here very often, but last night (or rather, early this morning) I had a really strange one. It's all a chronological jumble in my mind now, but at one point my sister and I were having to spend the night in our former bedroom at our parents' house. Our twin beds were still there - it was set up like it used to look 15 years ago. I remembered that we had our own place and that calmed me.
Then there was a part of the dream that I was watching more than participating in (this is more hazy). After that, we (my sister wasn't there anymore) were in a location off of 290 E (near Manor) that doesn't exist in real life . . . we crossed the street to a mansion/spa to eat dinner. We (a group of some people I know and some people non-existent) had big plates of Asian-inspired appetizers placed in the middle of the table, with a big plate and a small plate both empty in front of us. What does it say that I only filled the small plate with food, ate most of it, and was upset that the server took it before I finished my piece of fried chicken?
Something else happened and the last thing I remember before I woke is standing in a bathroom while Michelle Obama was hanging leopard-print towels for her daughters (who weren't there) to use. As she did this, she asked which parts of the zoo I was going to take the girls to.
And then the alarm woke me up.
So this is what the kids are listening to nowadays? I love the harmonies. The video's a little bizarre, but I like the song. I've been sitting at my desk dancing to it (I downloaded the song from iTunes, even).
And, yeah, I first heard it tonight on "So You Think You Can Dance."
Update: YouTube won't let me post the video, so here's the link. *sigh*
At home tonight, I happened upon a show about Alison Krauss that was basically an interview with her from the early aughts interspersed with videos from her various albums. So I saw "Let Me Touch You For a While" and then the video for "New Favorite", and I think they both feature the same guy. Am I right?
I've come to realize that usually what first gets me hooked on a song is not the lyrics. What tends to grab me at first listen is the melodic structure, the harmonies, the catchiness of the tune, and such. The lyrics are a nice bonus that I discover later. Upon multiple listens, I will focus more on the words (partly so I can sing along).
On this note, I listened to the Stars' "Personal" for the 12th time and finally noticed that the lyrics are based on the structure of a personal ad. I've been listening to the In Our Bedroom After the War album for most of a year and just realized this. Well, it was a nice surprise.
Some nice person wrote in my vox blog for "Best Local Blogger" on the A-List. That is so sweet! I'm assuming it was my sister or another family member, but if it was someone else, thank you, whoever you are!
Obviously, as Truecraig writes for Austinist, I have met him and read his posts regularly. I think he is deserving of the award. =)
update: It wasn't Leah; she says she didn't even know about the poll. So, thanks, someone else!
Leah emailed me the link to this video. I thought it was a typical a capella Christmas carol medley, but, boy was I wrong.
I swear Christmas advertising gets thrown upon us earlier and earlier each year. This year the ads started popping up on All Saint's Day. Next year, I estimate the ads to start showing Oct. 15.
I've already heard two familiar tunes used in this year's holiday ads. In Target's advent calendar ad, Jim Noir's "My Patch" has been changed to include holiday lyrics. Very, very strange. The ad:
And of course there is the constant barrage of Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" in Zales' ads. This one saddens me because I really, really liked that song once upon a time. Now it just reminds me of the disgusting diamond trade.
Last night I set the DVR to record 30 Rock because Al Gore was making an appearance on it. We never watch the show. I tried a couple episodes last year and didn't find them very funny at all. But last night's episode? It made Leah and I scream with laughter. It was so awesome. Al Gore was just the icing on an already great cake.
If you are as green as (or greener than) I am, you must watch it.
And producers, come on and give the writers what they deserve!
